Dark Sky Animation – Engaging Kids in Science & Sustainability

Partnering with the NSW Department of Planning and Environment, I led the creative development of an educational animation designed to engage school-aged children in the importance of protecting our night skies from light pollution.

Working with renowned astronomer, writer, and science communicator Fred Watson, we brought his animated alter ego to life in Adobe Character Animator, using in-camera motion capture and real-time lip-syncing to create a relatable, dynamic guide. The animation combined storytelling, character design, and soundscaping into a cohesive, multi-sensory experience - capturing attention while delivering a complex scientific message in a clear and accessible way.

The project was part of the Department’s Dark Sky Stage 3 education unit, aligning with broader environmental and sustainability goals. By highlighting how light pollution impacts astronomy, wildlife, ecosystems, and human health, the animation contributed to a campaign that not only educated but inspired behaviour change.

This project showcased the power of design-led storytelling in science communication: translating policy and environmental science into engaging content that connects with diverse audiences, supports curriculum outcomes, and advances public awareness around sustainability.
